New research cracks longer 4D volumetric video

Researchers at Peking University and Pengcheng Laboratory presented ATGS — Anchored Temporal Gaussian Splatting — a method for representing long volumetric videos without falling apart.

Why it matters: Length and temporal stability are the main obstacles keeping 4D gaussian splatting from practical volumetric video. Anchor-based formulations like ATGS are a credible path to minutes-long, artifact-free 4D content.

How it works:

  • The core insight: explicitly tracking long, complex motion with individual gaussian primitives is inherently unstable.
  • ATGS instead organizes gaussians around time-conditioned anchors that localize their spatial and temporal support.
  • A temporal windowing strategy activates only the anchors relevant to the queried time, improving scalability and coherence over long sequences.
  • Multi-level anchor features encode global, local spatial, and local temporal information to jointly constrain gaussian generation.

By the numbers: Evaluations cover long-sequence benchmarks including a 1,400-frame Long 360 dataset with large-scale motion, plus MeetRoom, VRU, SelfCap, and PKU-DyMVHumans — with ATGS consistently outperforming prior methods. The ACM Transactions on Graphics paper is led by Jiahao Wu, with Ronggang Wang as senior author.
